About Vasant Lad, Ayurvedic Physician, BAM&S, MASC

Vasant Lad is a globally renowned Ayurvedic physician, educator, author, and founder of the Ayurvedic Institute.

A native of India, he earned a Bachelor’s degree of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAM&S) from the University of Pune and a Master’s degree of Ayurvedic Science (MASc) from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya. He then served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune and as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine. His training also includes the study of allopathy (Western medicine) and surgery.

Vasant Lad has been teaching and practicing in the US for over 40 years, and continues to share his expertise at The Ayurvedic Institute, AyurPrana, and So Hum Healing Resort.

Ayurvedic physician Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc, is one of the most renowned and respected authorities on Ayurveda and Ayurvedic herbalism in the West, known for his genuine love, deep understanding, and contagious passion for sharing Ayurvedic wisdom.

A native of India, Vasant Lad was introduced to Ayurveda at a young age. He holds a Bachelor’s of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAM&S) degree from the University of Pune, as well as a Master’s of Ayurvedic Science (MASc) degree from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, and additional academic study and training in allopathic (Western) medicine.

After serving for three years as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune, India and teaching for 15 years as a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Lad traveled to the United States in 1979, where he began sharing his wealth of Ayurvedic knowledge with Westerners. In fact, he is credited as one of the first people to introduce Ayurveda to the West.

AyurPrana, the Ayurvedic Institute, and Beyond

In 1984, he landed in Albuquerque and founded The Ayurvedic Institute. Vasant Lad still teaches at the institute, which has since moved to Asheville, North Carolina. He also collaborates closely with AyurPrana, teaching workshops and courses at both AyurPrana and the Ayurvedic Institute, on a comprehensive range of key Ayurvedic topics including the doshas, vata, pitta, kapha, yoga, pranayama, panchakarma, and at-home cleansing. He also offers panchakarma treatments with a team of practitioners at the SoHum Mountain Healing Resort.

Vasant Lad is also the author of numerous books on Ayurveda, including The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies, Ayurveda - The Science of Self-Healing, The Secrets of the Pulse, and many more. He also founded and is closely involved with the Vasanta Institute of Ayurveda, a healing center outside of Pune, Maharshtra, India.
