What Is Fair Trade?
When you see a product has been certified as fair trade, this means that all members of the supply chain, including the farmers and workers who grow and tend the fields to those who package orders, are treated fairly and ethically. Certification takes into account working condition, wages, and much more.
Certification is a rigorous process that takes commitment, resources, and time. For example, one ingredient can take many months to become certified. That's because it's not just certifying one ingredient—it's actually certifying the entire supply chain.
And in our case (and any company who is a certified Fair for Life Fair Trade partner), the entire company must undergo thorough audits annually. During these audits, all parts of our business are reviewed, including our employee benefits, HR practices, wages, and much more. This process truly requires a full team effort, and all facets of our business must meet the highest standards to be eligible for certification. But to us, making sure everyone along the supply chain is treated well is an important component in creating truly sustainable development.

Banyan's Fair Trade Products
Until recently, fair trade certification has been limited to large commodity crops, such as chocolate and coffee, and has not been available in the herbal industry. However, this is changing because the demand for Fair Trade certified ingredients is increasing, and our farm partners realize the benefit of certification despite the incredible amount of time and paperwork required to certify. It is becoming increasingly possible for our sourcing team to purchase more certified Ayurvedic herbs.
As one of our core business pillars, we adhere to many globally accepted fair trade practices and principles. So while not all of our products are certified, you can be confident that our product ingredients are ethically sourced and fairly traded.
Banyan is proud to offer a growing list of fair trade certified herbs. More will be added to this fair trade store as we're working hard behind the scenes with our sourcing partners to certify as many herbs and ingredients as available and appropriate for our needs.
