When to Plant Garden Seeds
When you're first beginning, you may wonder how or when to plant garden seeds, and if you live in a cooler climate with a shorter growing season, when to start garden seeds indoors. Many of these seeds can be started either outdoors after the last frost, or indoors before the last frost. Check out individual product pages and seed packets for specific information, but here are a few tips:
- If you have a shorter growing season like we do in the Pacific Northwest, starting tomato seeds, cayenne pepper seeds, and eggplant seeds indoors up to 8–10 weeks before the last frost is an important way to get a head-start.
- Cilantro and lettuce do better when it's cooler and can thrive when directly sowed outside in the spring and fall, although you can do succession planting of both throughout spring and summer.
- Cucumber prefers to be directly planted outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
