About Organic Fennel Seeds

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a resilient and easy-to-grow herb known for its edible bulb as well as its bountiful seed harvest. It adds a touch of elegance to the garden with its feathery leaves, and its sunny yellow umbels of tiny flowers attract a host of pollinators.

Every seed purchase supports regenerative agriculture and restoration of wild spaces.

Planting

Planting fennel seeds directly in the garden is ideal, sowing after the last frost has passed in early to mid spring. Plant in fertile soil that is high in organic matter—this encourages healthy bulbs and an abundance of seeds.

After germination, which takes about 10–14 days, thin the plants so they have room to breathe and grow.

Growing & Harvesting

Water regularly, but avoid soggy soil. Fennel grows 3–5 feet tall with delicate, fern-like leaves and bright yellow umbel-shaped flowers.

Begin harvesting fennel seeds as soon as they form in their immature green state. Cut the entire seed head (umbel) from the plant, dry them in the sun or a well-ventilated area, then use your fingers to gently remove the seeds.

Dried fennel seeds can be infused into teas, mixed into salves, or added to spice blends. The leaves of the fennel plant are also edible and can be harvested throughout the growing season for fresh flavoring in salads, soups, or teas.
