Organic Basil Seeds

Genovese Basil (Ocimum basilicum), also known as Italian Basil, is aromatic, flavorful, and prized in the kitchen, particularly for pesto. This variety thrives in warm temperatures and is easy to grow in pots, container gardens, or garden plots.

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost, or outdoors once the soil has warmed in late spring. Basil is a warm-weather plant that grows best when temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Seeds generally take 5–10 days to germinate.

Basil thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering or soggy soil. Plants grow as tall as two feet, have large, shiny, dark green leaves, and exude a fragrance synonymous with summer.

Harvest once the plants have developed a good amount of foliage, about 6–8 weeks after planting. Pinch or cut the leaves from the top of the plant to encourage bushier growth, before they begin to flower. Regular harvesting is important for optimal growth ad maximum yield.
