About Organic Skullcap Seeds
About Organic Skullcap Seeds
Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) adds a touch of serenity to the garden with its lush green foliage and clusters of light blue flowers that blossom in late summer. This quick-growing herb can be planted as an annual or perennial and is known for its soothing benefits.
Every seed purchase supports regenerative agriculture and restoration of wild spaces.
Planting
Planting
Cold stratify skullcap seeds 2–4 weeks before sowing: mix the seeds with peat moss in a jar or plastic bag, and place in the refrigerator. This step is key to successful germination.
After stratification, sow seeds indoors or directly in the garden once the danger of frost has passed. If starting indoors, transplant the seedlings once they have developed a few leaves.
Growing & Harvesting
Growing & Harvesting
Skullcap grows best in moist, well-drained soil with full sun or partial shade. Once established, the plant is quite resilient and needs minimal care, growing up to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Though skullcap is technically a perennial, many gardeners grow it as an annual, reseeding it each year to ensure a fresh crop.
For optimal potency, harvest when the flowers are in full bloom, usually in late summer. Cut the stems a couple inches above the soil line, harvesting the entirety of the plant at once. Dry the leaves and flowers immediately after harvesting to preserve their beneficial properties.
