Organic Marshmallow Seeds

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a vigorous and easy-to-grow herb with elegant pink-white blossoms. It can be left in the garden to flower year after year, or harvested for its roots which are prized by herbalists for their cooling and moistening qualities.

Sow in mid spring for late spring plantings or late summer for fall plantings. Scarify the seeds before sowing by rubbing the marshmallow seed on sandpaper. Plant in the garden with 1–2 feet between plants. Expect germination in 10–20 days.

Water regularly, especially during their first growing season. By their second year, deep, infrequent waterings are fine.

Harvest marshmallow roots as early as the fall of their first growing season, or wait until the second year for larger roots. Harvest in the early spring or fall when the plant’s prana resides in its root system, using a digging fork or shovel to remove from the ground.

Use the root in its fresh or dry form for marshmallow root tea or other herbal creations. If drying the root, cut it into small chunks to support complete drying.
