Ingredients:
- 1 cup toor dal
- 2 cups water or broth
- ½ tablespoon ghee
- ½ teaspoon mineral salt
- ¼ teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
- ¼ teaspoon hingvastak
- ¼ teaspoon cumin powder
- Ground black pepper to taste
- ½ cup assorted seasonal vegetables (optional)
Directions:
Wash and soak dal overnight.
Drain the dal and combine with water in a saucepan. Add all spices (except salt), ghee, and vegetables (optional) and bring to a boil. Simmer covered for 35 minutes or until dal and veggies are tender.
This basic toor dal recipe is hearty, creamy, and delicious. Add more water if you prefer the dal to be like a soup, or leave it as-is for a thicker version. Serve with a spoonful of ghee on top and enjoy!
