25 years of living, loving, and breathing Ayurveda
Initially, I learned about Ayurveda from a wonderful Ayurvedic doctor named George Eassey. He recommended that I go and study at the Ayurvedic Institute. At age 19, with an inner knowing so deep, I had to follow it—I moved from Seattle to the southwest.
When I arrived that first day and met Vasant Lad and sat in class with my fellow students, my life began to steer in a different direction. Every part of me knew that I was on my path, with the right teacher.
Vasant Lad continues to teach us so many gems of wisdom. One thing I have heard him repeat often in class is, “I'm not teaching you what to think, I'm teaching you the art of how to think.” This is the gift of a true teacher.
When are you most likely to go out of balance and how do you bring yourself back in balance using Ayurveda?
Due to having more kapha in my constitution, I tend to slip out of balance in late winter and spring. Sometimes I feel lethargic and congested at this time. The best things for me to do to restore balance is to get moving, practice pranayama, and drink my ginger-tulsi tea!
What does the future of Ayurveda look like to you?
Since Ayurveda is a living Vidya (body of wisdom), I feel that it will continue to grow and evolve with us. Vasant Lad has always said that Ayurveda is the medicine of the future! The timeless principles of Ayurveda will continue to integrate into many facets of our lives.
What's one Ayurvedic practice anyone can implement to spur change in their life, right here, right now?
Right now, you can practice Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (Alternate Nostril Breathing) or Kapalabhati Pranayama (Shining Skull Breath). In five minutes, you can rebalance your nervous system, dissolve anxious feelings, and restore inner peace. It is so amazing!
